Process requirements and specifications
WP1
Aims at defining the marine environment specifications and the details of the case studies to be assessed, forming the envelope of design and operational conditions and including applicable constraints. The case studies to be assessed will focus on LNG as a fuel, including vessel and offshore platform cases.
Task 1.1: Maritime case specifications and CO2 storage options
This task focuses on the case specification for off-shore and marine studies. Initial screening of vessels and off-shore systems of potential maritime CCS use, review of integration options, identification of technical and operational challenges, and solutions to be explored. Moreover, it aims to collect and evaluate exact exhaust gas compositions and their fluctuations. In addition the possibility of waste heat utilization and temperature levels are determined. This can be beneficial for membrane operation. Another target of this task is to identify the most prominent candidate processes for the CO2 storage options (e.g. liquefaction, underwater storage, ashore storage etc.) in accordance with maritime case specifications.
Task 1.2: Review of membrane-based CO2 capture technologies
Identification of state-of-the-art membrane system technologies capable to cope with the stringent ship/offshore installation environment will be conducted by CERTH, IKTS, DBI and NETL. Analysis of the advanced membrane system in terms of design and operational characteristics, limitations and performance aspects. Ceramic and polymeric gas-liquid membrane contactors and gas permeators will be considered. Identification of potential solvents to be used in the gas-liquid membrane contacting process. Emphasis will be given to seawater based solvents and solvents compatible with the marine environment.
